Almost everything, it seems, has gone digital in recent years. But there will always be a need for secure physical storage. From family heirlooms, jewellery, Pokemon cards and first-edition comics to legal documents, bullion and high-value collectibles, individuals and businesses continue to seek trusted specialist facilities designed to protect their most valuable possessions.

The newly opened Vitessa Vault in North London was created to meet that need. It takes a fresh approach that combines traditional customer service values with advanced modern security. The facility, situated in a former NatWest bank building, provides premium private safe deposit boxes within a purpose-built, high-security vault environment.

Founded and operated by experienced local owners, Vitessa Vault was designed not simply as a secure storage facility, but as a trusted, community-focused business where customers feel personally supported and protected.

Having lived and worked in North London for many years, the owners conceived Vitessa Vault as a service tailored to the needs of the local community.

"We wanted to create something that felt personal and trustworthy. Many of our clients are local families or business owners. They want the reassurance of exceptionally high security, but they also want a welcoming environment where they know the people they are dealing with."

To achieve this balance between customer experience and uncompromising protection, Vitessa Vault partnered with AD Systems Ltd (ADS) to design and install a fully integrated security solution capable of meeting the demands of one of the UK's highest-security commercial environments.

Unique Challenges

Creating a modern safe deposit facility presents unique security challenges. Unlike many commercial premises, a vault environment must provide multiple overlapping layers of protection, strict access control and continuous monitoring while remaining practical and comfortable for legitimate customers to use.

For Vitessa Vault, security was a defining element of the business from day one.

"Security was absolutely critical. Clients are trusting us with items that are often irreplaceable. We needed systems that would provide complete confidence, and we didn't want to cut any corners."

In addition to the safe deposit box facility, Vitessa Vault also offers retail sales of gold and silver bullion together with other high-value investment products, allowing customers to purchase and securely store their investments on site.

The facility was designed to achieve Secured by Design accreditation, the official police security initiative promoting crime prevention through high standards of physical and electronic security. Vitessa Vault is the only UK safety deposit box centre or retail bank building to have achieved Gold Accreditation from the Metropolitan Police.

ADS was involved from an early stage of the project. Based in Blackpool, the company specialises in CCTV and access control systems, with extensive experience in delivering integrated security solutions for high-security environments.

John Garnett of ADS explains that the objective was to develop a fully integrated solution combining advanced facial recognition access control, high-security interlocking doors, multi-layer authentication, comprehensive CCTV surveillance, intercom communication and centralised management.

"Facial recognition capabilities were a major attraction because they provide one of the highest levels of access security currently available. You have to be the authorised individual standing in front of the reader, and that's essential when there are seventeen controlled access points throughout the facility."

One of the project's biggest technical challenges involved integrating sophisticated electronic security with specialist secure doors supplied by Warrior Doors.

"The doors themselves were an engineering challenge. We were dealing with extremely high-security physical infrastructure, and it was vital that every electronic component integrated perfectly without compromising the integrity of the construction."

Highly Secure Solution

ADS designed and installed a fully integrated security solution centred around three key elements: access control, surveillance and intercom communication, all managed through a centralised security management platform.

At the heart of the access strategy is facial recognition technology providing secure, frictionless authentication throughout the building.

"Facial recognition was a major part of the concept. Vitessa Vault wanted a system that was both highly secure and straightforward for legitimate users."

The facial recognition system is combined with dual-authentication procedures and interlocking security doors to create multiple controlled access stages throughout the building.

Users must successfully complete several layers of verification before progressing deeper into secure areas. Interlocking doors ensure that only one secure zone can be accessed at a time, maintaining strict control over movement within the facility.

"The interlock arrangement is extremely important. It creates a carefully managed flow through the building and allows access to be controlled with great precision."

The access control infrastructure is complemented by comprehensive CCTV surveillance covering every critical area of the site, including high-performance cameras providing excellent image quality both day and night.

The facility also incorporates an integrated intercom system, enabling staff to communicate safely with visitors before granting access.

All security systems are centrally managed through a unified platform, providing monitoring, access management, alarm handling and operational oversight from a single interface.

"Having everything integrated gives the client a significant operational advantage. Rather than managing separate systems independently, everything works together seamlessly."

Collaborative Approach

One of the defining aspects of the project was the close collaboration between ADS and Warrior Doors throughout installation.

Because of the exceptionally high-security physical infrastructure, conventional installation methods were not always suitable. Cabling routes and electronic integration points had to be carefully planned to preserve the integrity of the secure doors and vault structure.

"There was a great deal of cooperation between ourselves and Warrior Doors. They incorporated cabling into the doors during manufacture, allowing us to connect directly without drilling into completed security doors."

This collaborative approach ensured that both the physical and electronic security systems operated seamlessly together.

The owners believe this partnership reflected the wider philosophy behind the business.

"What we appreciated was that everybody involved genuinely cared about getting it right. It never felt like a standard installation. Everyone understood how important security and trust were for this business."

Client Confidence

The completed solution has delivered exactly the balance Vitessa Vault was seeking: exceptionally high levels of security combined with a reassuring and professional customer experience.

The integrated platform now provides multi-layer biometric access control, centralised monitoring, comprehensive surveillance, controlled movement throughout the facility and real-time visibility of security events.

Customers benefit from advanced security without unnecessary complexity.

"Clients are impressed by the security from the moment they arrive. Equally importantly, the experience feels smooth, professional and welcoming rather than intimidating."

The facial recognition system has proved particularly valuable in streamlining secure access procedures while maintaining rigorous control standards.

"It's about combining convenience with security. Clients don't want complicated processes, but they absolutely want reassurance that their valuables are protected."

From ADS' perspective, the project demonstrates how modern integrated security technologies can perform effectively within one of the most demanding commercial environments.

"This is one of the most secure types of commercial site you can work on. The fact that all of the systems integrate so effectively across access control, surveillance and management really demonstrates the flexibility of the overall solution."

The owners also praise the commitment shown by ADS throughout the project.

"From the very beginning, they were fully engaged. They attended planning meetings, supported the design process, supplied equipment and worked collaboratively throughout the installation. Their professionalism, expertise and commitment to delivering the right solution built a genuine relationship based on trust."

Old-Fashioned Values Meet Modern Technology

While the project showcases advanced security technology, Vitessa Vault believes its success is equally rooted in traditional values of trust, discretion and community engagement.

"Many of our customers come through personal recommendation and long-standing relationships. We wanted technology that reinforces that trust rather than replacing it."

The Vitessa Vault project demonstrates how carefully integrated security systems can support some of the highest-security commercial applications in the UK. It also highlights the importance of collaboration between physical security specialists and electronic security integrators when designing truly secure environments.

Through close collaboration between Vitessa Vault, AD Systems and Warrior Doors, the project has created a modern, intelligent security environment capable of protecting extremely high-value assets without compromising customer experience.

By combining advanced facial recognition, integrated surveillance, interlocking security systems and centralised management, Vitessa Vault has created a facility that reflects both cutting-edge security standards and traditional values of trust and community.

The results exceeded even the owners' expectations.

"During our final inspection, the insurance underwriters commented that, having insured similar facilities across the country, this was probably the most secure facility they had seen in the UK.

The following week we underwent our final Metropolitan Police Secured by Design assessment. We had originally applied for Bronze accreditation, but following the inspection we were awarded Gold. We were informed that no other safety deposit box centre or retail bank premises in the UK had achieved this level of accreditation.

Technology has played a huge role in helping us achieve this standard, but ultimately the project is about giving people complete peace of mind. That's what this facility has been built to deliver."
